Is baldness taking away your confidence? You’re not alone. Hair loss can be a source of insecurity, leading men and women to consider hair transplant surgery as an option to restore a full head of hair. If you’re thinking about getting a hair transplant, it’s important to know the techniques involved, what to expect during and after the procedure, the costs, and who is a good candidate for a hair transplant.
Hair Transplant Surgery Techniques
Hair transplant surgery has evolved so much over the years. Two of the most popular techniques used for hair transplantation are Microscopically Dissected Elliptical Excision (MDEE), formerly known as Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).
Microscopically Dissected Elliptical Excision (MDEE)
MDEE, previously called FUT, involves removing a strip of tissue from the donor zone, usually on the back and sides of the head, and transplanting the individual follicular units into areas with hair loss or thinning.
Follicular Unit Excision (FUE)
Follicular Unit Excision (FUE), more commonly known as Follicular Unit Extraction, involves harvesting hair follicles directly from the donor zone one graft at a time. This technique requires the donor area to be shaved short, allowing the surgeon to have a clear view of the available donor site and individual follicular units.
The two methods mainly differ in terms of how the donor hair is harvested and the type of scar each method leaves: MDEE leaves a thin linear scar and FUE with tiny, pinpoint scars.
What to Expect
Before the procedure, your hair transplant surgeon will assess your hair loss and talk to you about your desired goals, and then create a plan that’s tailored to your needs. During the procedure, you’ll receive a local anesthetic, and your surgeon will begin harvesting the donor hair with the technique that is most appropriate for you. The hair grafts are then implanted into the recipient area using tiny incisions. The procedure can take anywhere between four to eight hours, depending on the number of grafts required.
The recovery process after hair transplant surgery can take several weeks, and you may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. You’ll need to avoid strenuous activity and direct sunlight to prevent damage to the grafts. Your hair transplant surgeon will provide you with detailed steps on how to care for your scalp and hair after the procedure, including when to shampoo and how to avoid damaging the grafts.
Cost of Hair Transplant Surgery
The cost of hair transplant surgery can vary depending on the number of grafts required, the technique used, and the surgeon’s experience and location. On average, FUT can cost between $4,000 and $10,000, while FUE can range from $4,000 to $15,000 per session. While some insurance plans may cover the cost of the procedure, it’s essential to discuss your options with your provider. If insurance does not cover the cost, many financing options are available.
