Navigating Male Hair Concerns: From Thinning to Receding Hairlines

It may surprise you to learn that most men (up to 85%) experience some form of thinning in their hairlines before they turn 50 years of age, and for some, this process starts in their teens and 20s. Sometimes, this hair loss is the result of a medical condition. However, sometimes this loss is hereditary.

Male pattern hair loss is progressive and typically starts sometime after puberty. It can take decades to become bald from this condition and may start as a receding hairline. Thyroid imbalances, vitamin deficiencies, medications and illness can trigger telogen effluvium, which causes a significant number of your follicles to rest without restarting the hair growth phase. This type of hair loss eventually reverses if you fix the problem.

Several types of autoimmune diseases, such as alopecia and discoid lupus erythematosus, can also impact your hair growth, and although medications help regrowth, some cases never experience hair regrowth. Inflammation and fungal infections can also impact hair growth. If you notice hair thinning or baldness, you should consult with a dermatologist to determine the cause of the thinning. Then, learn about treatment options.

Applying Hair Serums

After visiting with your doctor, you can opt to test a hair serum for growth. These serums can address multiple hair loss causes. For example, they can moisturize and cleanse your scalp, creating a healthy environment for hair growth. They can also moisturize and strengthen your hair. These serums discourage fading color and encourage shine as well. Many of these serums have saw palmetto, red clover, minoxidil and redensyl, which encourage hair growth.

Choosing the Right Hair Growth Supplement

You can also treat hair loss through supplements. For example, you can take vitamins A, B, C and D as well as biotin, iron, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids. Biotin encourages keratin production, which is important in the hair growth process. You can also find this vitamin in nuts, eggs, milk and soy products. To encourage cell development, you need folic acid, B11, which promotes blood circulation. Leafy, green vegetables, citrus and liver are good sources.

Zinc builds proteins and body tissues, and your hair has a significant amount of protein in it. You can find this mineral in meat, legumes, seeds and brown bread. Iron helps your body produce hemoglobin, which distributes oxygen in red blood cells to the body. Eat meats, leafy vegetables and pumpkin seeds for additional iron. Selenium helps your body process protein and is available in fish and Brazil nuts.

Vitamins A, C and E also contribute to a healthy scalp, collagen production and increased blood flow. You can find these vitamins in eggs, milk, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, berries, citrus, tomatoes, kiwi, broccoli, carrots and cabbage.

As you analyze your diet and research hair serums or creams, such as those with azelaic acid, and vitamins, learn about other habits you can adopt to encourage healthy hair growth.
